The Geeqie main window is designed for quick and easy navigation of images. The window consists of three regions: the File Pane , the Folder pane , and the Image Pane (optionally bordered by Sidebars ) , all bordered by Menus and Status Bar .

The Focus directories pane, Focus files pane, Focus image pane, and Focus address bar actions move keyboard focus directly to those areas. Assign shortcuts in Keyboard Options; these actions have no default shortcuts. The directories, files, and address-bar actions reveal their panes when hidden. All four actions also work when the tools window is floating. Focusing the address bar selects its text. Focusing the image presents its window and gives keyboard focus to the active split image or fullscreen image, without advancing to another image.

Multiple instances of the main window may be started via the Windows ▸ New Window ( Ctrl+N ) menu item, and the Layout of each may be individually configured in the Window Layout dialogue.

Multiple windows normally belong to one Geeqie application instance, including windows opened by separate command line launches. They may be closed individually or simultaneously. If File ▸ Quit ( Ctrl+Q ) is pressed, all windows belonging to that application instance will be closed. Window restoration at the next startup depends on the Remember session setting in Window Options.

If Windows ▸ Close Window ( Ctrl+W ) is pressed, only that window will be closed. Closing the last main window quits the application instance. To start an independent instance, see Independent Instances.

Several window layouts may be defined and displayed at any time, as described in the Windows menu .
